Splendid NEW inner-outer Italian harpsichord made in the atelier of Ugo Casiglia in 2016. Copy made during the restoration of the original which, without signature, a comparative analysis with an instrument signed and dated “Rome 1640”, restored in France, allows us to attribute the artefact in question to Giovan Pietro Polizzino. He was a well-known maker of “polyharmonic” instruments within the crowded seventeenth-century harpsichord-making Roman panorama. A very refined instrument aesthetically, cared for in the smallest details and with a bright and silvery sound. Interior painting of the lid made by Elisabetta Lanzoni on our suggestion "Porto Mediterraneo" by P.J. Volaire. Audio: https://ugocasiglia.it/en/harpsichord/g-p-polizzino-roma-1640ca/

Weight: 70kg approx.
Dimensions: 225cm x 92cm
Original harpsichord restored in 2019 in the atelier of Ugo Casiglia. Formerly in the collection of musicologist H. C. Robbins (London), it was then sold by Sotheby's in 1971. It later appeared on the German art market. The instrument seems to belong to the Italian false inside-outside type, but some of its features suggest a possible belonging to the Austrian school. The lever of the first key is signed "Josef". The painting on the lid is attributed to the Brescian painter Faustino Bocchi, while the decorations of the case date back to the late nineteenth century. Sweet and singing sound, partially reconstructed soundboard, original keyboard, original wrestplank, completely new guides and jacks. All original parts have been preserved.

Splendid NEW inner-outer Italian harpsichord made in the atelier of Ugo Casiglia in 2022. Copy made during the restoration of the original which, without signature, was identified through the study of the mouldings by the specialist Denzil Wright. Giacomo Ridolfi was a pupil of the prestigious workshop of Girolamo Zenti and a leading figure of the Roman school. Some examples of his production remain and this is the only existing and available copy in the world, entirely handcrafted without the use of power tools. The instrument is the typical Italian Baroque model with two 8' registers, cypress case and fir soundboard with guaranteed seasoning of at least 20 years.

Fortepiano J. Schanz – Wien 1825 Fortepiano J. Schanz – Wien 1825 Fortepiano J. Schanz – Wien 1825 Fortepiano J. Schanz – Wien 1825
Date added: 2025-05-19
Restored in Ugo Casiglia's atelier in 2017, it is one of the sixty Johann Schanz currently documented. Toward the end of the 18th century, Johann Schanz was one of the most prominent makers in Vienna. He took over the family business after the death of his brother Wenzel. His instruments, appreciated by Haydn, were produced by a large, organised, and productive workshop. A careful restoration has perfectly re-established its functionality. Small parts were rebuilt based on similar instruments by Schanz, the instrument is to be considered almost entirely in original condition. This fortepiano has been used for numerous recordings and played on the occasion of two editions of the Clementi Competition in Rome. The instrument, in perfect aesthetic and functional conditions, has the typical characteristics of the coeval Viennese fortepianos (1820-25ca.), With the extended keyboard Do0-G6 (CC - g) and an entirely original, extremely light Viennese action (only some rods of the hammers have been repaired or redone); the lightness of the mechanics, together with the small hammers (covered in deerskin), which give life to a clear and bright voice but still full and round, allows a great agility of execution, thus making it an ideal instrument for the execution of the repertoire of early Classicism, from Haydn and Mozart to Clementi and Beethoven.
The 5 Pedals operate on: a string - bassoon - 2 moderators - dampening lifting.
The case is veneered in walnut briar.
The normal tuning is at 420 hz but the instrument, which has excellent tuning resistance, can be tuned up to 440 hz.
The restoration, which included a new stringing, a functional revision of the mechanics (in any case already in excellent condition) and the remaking of the last layer of leather of the hammers, was carried out in 1998 in the construction and restoration atelier of Ugo Casiglia - Palermo, (one of the best known and most popular Italian builders and restorers of harpsichords and fortepianos https://ugocasiglia.it/).
Since then the instrument has been used regularly (even for some concerts) and kept in perfect condition.
The instrument can be viewed and tested at the owner's home in Palermo (Sicily). In case of concrete interest, he is available to send an audio or video recording for an initial evaluation of the sound characteristics .
A recording of a live concert can still be listened to on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yO8-rZMKgSY
